Lessons #3,#4 & #13 Thumb- Finger(s) Independence

I am putting this "lesson" up front with the video and TAB...BUT- the way I perform the song is really kind of the final result for this style of playing!

So I have included a lot of "prep" lessons for the less advanced players.

(On the very bottom (scroll all the way down) is the "Hideaway" PDF TAB)

This style of guitar involves playing both the "Rhythm" guitar part and the "Lead guitar" part at the same time. These lessons teach you how to do this.

(Be Warned: This style is not a quick study.)My solo version of "Hideaway" is a great example of "Thumpin' Thumb and Fiery Fingers" (The sub title of my "The Blues Guitar Book")

See that thumb there! (The right one--duh--) If you can't do just that alone ("on the bottom") you will not have a vessel to put all that "stuff on top" into. I am using the video of me performing Freddie Kings "Hideaway" on solo acoustic guitar so you can see that Thumpin' Thumb! The first lesson will give you that Thumb - what I call "The stuff on the bottom".!

This is the most important step on the path to Thumb/Finger(s) independence.

NOTE: This is also a 12-Bar progression! Be sure to look at the previous lesson for that if you are not clear on it.

I've put a PDF up here of the solo guitar TAB, but, it does not notate every little improvised lick I put into my version. It is just the basic melodies and how they work as a solo piece. Also, you can find the TAB for Freddie King type version all over the web. If you can somewhat "master" these lessons on this page, you should be able to easily apply that TAB and put an acoustic solo version together.

(scroll on past the video for lessons #3 & #4 & #13 PDF and Audio Tracks)

Again, scroll all the way down for the "Hideaway" PDF TAB

Stan Hirsch (Hideaway Solo Guitar)

Thumb -"The stuff on the bottom"

These lessons gets your thumb goin'---There is an example for "blues in A" and one for "blues in E". Hideaway is blues in E.

Also, it is a "shuffle"--not--"straight 1/8"! There are examples for both of those rhythms here!

The first lesson here (With 3 tracks) is a great place to start. The 2nd lesson here is an addition to that, and is pretty much what I am playing in the video.

You can Read/Download the lessons in PDF and Listen/download the audio in mp3. (This is lesson #3 tracks 6-7-8 and lesson #4 tracks 9-10-11 in my book TT&FF.)

Finger(s)- "the stuff on top"

This "Stuff on Top" ("lead guitar") lesson is not a quick lesson. These will take time, so take your time. Pick it up bit by bit.Move on to some of the next lessons, then come back to it!

These lessons will give you the necessary technique to start putting the "stuff on top" over that thumb rhythm! These are not the melody notes for Hideaway, but are the basic moves to get you going. (this is lesson #13 Tracks 27-28-29-30- from book TT&FF.)
