"Jazz guitar has always been, if not the least appreciated jazz instrument, certainly the most misunderstood. But the reason for the shock here is because nearly anything that Stan Hirsch, a local blues musical icon/institution for years, and his longtime Protégé Eric McFadden do together is immediately startling, then intriguing and always technically awe-inspiring. lovers of jazz and jazz guitar especially need to seek out this record!".--By Kevin Hopper-For the Journal

Captured Alive CD (Doin' Jazz)(BFM041)(2004)

(Stan says it should probably say: Eric McFadden and Stan Hirsch.)

Anyhow, the stuff he does with Eric is really very different than his Solo acoustic Blues stuff! Although they touch the blues along with about everything else!

Eric was a student of Stan's many years back. After a few years of lessons, they just started jammin' together. Soon playing gigs around town and then later gigging all over - Taos, San Francisco, down at the International Guitar Fest, in Mexico, really wherever and whenever thier schedules permitted.

They have put out only two albums in a long history of playing together. As Stan said,"We just have never really had the time to go into the studio together. Every time we have the chance to get together it is just a brief opening between his schedule and mine, so we do a gig. Once and awhile we even get to enjoy a meal together."

But, they actually did get to meet up down in Mexico at the Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival. "Neither of us knew the other was gonna be there, so it was a great week of hanging together." (The picture in the background was taken there.)

Of course that means they never rehearse--so they really have to listen and be on their toes. (As Stan says, "I think we kind of like it that way It really keeps things fresh and spontaneous.")

Thus their CD's are all live performances. Really having fun jamming'! Eric and Stan are very tuned in and can take the jam things almost anywhere. As these recordings pay witness to!

For the most part the cuts on this CD were recorded by George Ripley the sound man over a course of about 5 years (2000-20004) at various gigs, (mostly Club R&B in ABQ. a few in Taos N.M.-maybe one or two cuts in San Francisco CA) They are very live/live so you may hear a lot of audience participation (sometimes a little too much, but?).

Anyhow, obviously they had a great time! (still do when they have the chance.)

You can read the press reviews, you can also listen/download the songs.

This CD might be available to purchase on Eric Mcfaddens site, but I know they usually have some for sale when they do a show together. But here you can LISTEN or DOWNLOAD mp3

Note from Stan:

My situation at this time is that I have no distributor for my albums. Also, because of the covid restrictions, I am unable to do much touring which is how I sale most cd's. That being the case I offer my music for free. Just listen/download what you would like to own and share

"And while there have long been fantastical groupings of phenomenal guitarist --McLaughlin, DiMeola and De Lucia, G3, Guitaer Summit, etc...the pairing of blues phenom Stan Hirsch and his one time student and bonafide virtuoso Eric McFadden holds a special significance"
